READY, steady ... grow.

Wearsiders will come face to face in a hair-raising contest for charity.

Sunderland’s Goals Soccer Centre is staging a Movember football tournament and organisers are calling on men in the city to grow the best moustache.

“It’s something for us to be very proud of,” said assistant manager Neil Couling.

“Last year we did it as an individual site which had 40 teams and the interest was huge.

“Because it was a massive success, the Movember charity got in touch with Goals about expanding.”

Movember is a foundation which encourages blokes to sprout taches, throughout the month of November, to raise funds and to increase awareness of men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

This year will see 42 football centres across the UK host Movember tournaments, with interest building on Wearside.

“We’ve had lots of interest and have plenty of teams signed up already,” said Neil.

“We will be pushing towards 40 teams again, but we want it to be as big as possible.”

This year’s tournament will take place on November 23 at 6.30pm.

It costs £40 per team and you can register by calling 01913370360 or by turning up on the night.

There will be a raffle and charity auction with all money going to the charity.

Last year saw a host of celebrities join in the Movember furry face fun.

Gary Lineker, Stephen Fry, Sunderland midfielder David Meyler and the Echo’s Richard Ord were amongst those doing their bit.

If you are planning on growing a moustache for Movember this year, send photos of your progress to echo.news@northeast-press.co.uk.
