A FAMILY who had a lucky escape after a car ploughed into their home will have to wait at least two weeks to move back in.

Gentoo workers carried out a structural survey at the Ferndale Road house yesterday after a blue Citroen Saxo slammed into the front of the Penshaw home at about 6.50pm on Sunday.

It is believed the car veered off the road and into the kitchen after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The family, believed to be a couple in their 40s with three children, had to be evacuated along with their neighbours.

Ian Porter, managing director of Gentoo Sunderland, said: “We have completed a full structural survey to the property and there is a substantial amount of damage. The remedial work will begin today and is expected to take up to two weeks.

“We hope to get the family back into their home as soon as this work is complete.”

Anyone witnesses should phone police on 03456 043 043.
