A FAMILY had to flee a blaze at their home.
The fire broke out at the home of Maureen Birch, 44, and her husband Sam, 43, in Belles Ville, Gilesgate, Durham.
Roadworker Mr Birch tried to fight the fire himself, but had to move his wife, his in-laws Dorothy and Brian Hodgson and grandson Declan, seven, out of the house.
Mrs Birch was able to save a memorial plaque made in memory of the couple’s son Harley, who died when he was 10 weeks old a decade ago.
The cause of the blaze, which started at 6.15pm on Saturday, is not yet known.
