A PRACTICE nurse was “flattered” after becoming one of the first entries in our Best of Health competition.
Jo West, who works for Encompass Healthcare in The Galleries, Washington, was nominated by a patient who said: “Jo is extremely kind, sincere and shows a real depth of care for her patients.”
The nomination paid tribute to Jo’s reassuring manner and “her support, care, and genuine empathy”.
And when she was told she was in the running for a title, Jo said: “It is so nice that someone took the time to go on the Echo website and do that. I am very flattered.”
Jo has been as qualified nurse for 30 years and has been with Encompass Healthcare for ten years as a senior practice nurse. Her role is to manage people with long term conditions. “We diagnose them, treat them and help them to manage the condition,” she said.
“Our role is prevention. It is working with people with conditions and help get them stable, and stop complications from happening. We are often the first point of contact.”
The practice has 6,000 patients and Jo said the part of her role which gives her most satisfaction was “dealing with patients and seeing them coming in and going from feeling unwell to being diagnosed. It is getting them stable, educating people and working with them. It is forming relationships with them.”
Jo is one of an impressive number of entries which we have already received in this year’s Best of Health awards. We want more. It’s easy to nominate and you can do it either by using the form on this page or by going online. Feel free to put forward as many of your favourite health workers as you think deserve honours. All entries must be received by March 20.
After that, a panel of judges will meet around a week later to begin the difficult task of narrowing down the field.
They will draw up a shortlist in each of our categories. And all those who make it to the shortlist will be invited to the finals at the Stadium of Light on April 16.
