EXTRA Metro trains will run during the festive period.

More will operate throughout the network, during the day through Sunderland, and in the evening to South Shields and Airport.

In total, an extra 70 services a day will run until New Year’s Eve.

Nexus, which owns and manages Metro, is funding the extra trains – as well as giving passengers a discount on Metrosaver passes bought this month.

Director of customer services Tobyn Hughes said: “By providing extra trains we are making it easy to get to the shops, which is good for shoppers and helps support city and town centre retailers.

“As an added bonus, all passengers who buy a four-week season ticket can benefit from a 10 per cent discount.

“These passengers are regular Metro users and will see savings of up to £6.”

Richard McClean, managing director of Metro operator DB Regio Tyne and Wear, said: “December is always a busy time given the festivities and the rush to complete Christmas shopping.

“So it’s only right Metro provides extra trains to ensure we can handle the Christmas rush and get people from A to B in a quick and convenient way.”
