THE sound of ‘explosions’ and a ‘large fire’ on allotments in Seaham turned out to be controlled burning on the site.

Firefighters from Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue service were called to the scene yesterday afternoon to reports of a large fire with explosions.

A crew from Seaham Fire Station raced to the scene on the allotments in Cottages Road to find that the alarm was caused by a controlled fire.

The crew returned to the station at just after
4pm.

Meanwhile, firefighters from Peterlee Fire Station were called to a car on fire on Manor Way in the town centre.

Crews used a hosereel to extinguish the blaze, which left the vehicle badly damaged during yesterday’s early morning fire.
