A SUNDERLAND-born ex-serviceman has been named mayor of a County Durham town.
Peter Quinn, who was “born and bred” in Ford Estate, has taken up the prestigious position in Shildon.
The 62-year-old left the city 23 years ago to start a family with wife Shirley, 50.
Mr Quinn, who has served as a Labour town councillor for the past two decades, said: “It was a great honour to be asked to be mayor.
“It’s a position I will hold for a year and I’m very much looking forward to it.”
Before becoming a catering instructor and care home chef, he also served in Northern Ireland with the 1st Battalion Light Infantry during The Troubles in the late 1960s and 1970s.
“I’ve lived away from Sunderland for quite some time, but I’ve never forgotten my roots,” said the dad-of-one.
“I still have some very good friends there and follow the football team through thick and thin.”
