COUNCIL bosses are offering an array of prizes in a bid to get more Wearsiders recycling.
Laptops, a tablet PC, money to spend on clothes, beauty, sports and a blu-ray player are up for grabs in a monthly draw for households that recycle jars and aerosols.
Tracey Jackson, of Fulwell, put blue stickers on her glass empties and won a viewpad tablet computer.
Tracey said: “I’ve always done my bit for recycling through either Kerb-it or the blue bin so putting some stickers on to glass jars wasn’t really any extra effort.
“You never expect to win these things.”
The council is working alongside the North East Recycling Rewards scheme, funded by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Valpak Limited.
Councillor James Blackburn, the city council’s portfolio holder for attractive and inclusive city, said: “You can put aerosols and glass jars into your blue bin and now if you register for a sticker pack, you could win prizes too.
“People who register will receive a pack in the post to include personalised stickers that are unique to their home address.
“The stickers are then applied to empty glass jars and aerosol cans and placed in the blue bin. It’s really that easy.”
Four or five winners will be selected each month at random.
Coun Blackburn added: “The council is always keen to promote the importance of recycling and pleased to support an initiative that encourages residents to recycle more of their waste packaging.
“All people have to do is put their sticker on a glass jar or an aerosol before it goes into the blue bin and then they have a chance of being a winner.
“It’s a winner for households and, of course, it’s a winner for the environment if we all do more recycling.
“Even small changes can make a real difference,” said Coun Blackburn.
