Young people write for Sunderland fanzine

YOUNGSTERS are being given the chance to try their hand at writing about the beautiful game.

Sunderland fanzine Seventy3 has teamed up with Hendon Young People’s Project (HYPP) as part of a sponsorship deal.

The magazine, which is released every two months, will pay for equipment for the HYPP football team.

In return budding writers will be encouraged to submit copy for the publication, and earn extra money by selling copies on match days.

Seventy3 editor Mal Robinson, from Fulwell, said: “We will sponsor the group’s under-21s team for the next season, but this is also a great opportunity for the young people to have a slot in each issue.

“There’s also plans to hold an annual arts exhibition featuring work done by the kids.

“We thought this was a great way to give something back to the community and we support anything that keeps kids off the streets.”

Like their sporting heroes, the HYPP football team has been enjoying success on the pitch thanks to the tutelage of youth workers Richy Duggan Junior, Tom Smith and Micky Waters.

Lead youth worker Judith Britton said: “We were aware of the work Seventy3 does in the community, and because it’s a Sunderland fanzine we thought it would be great to collaborate with them.

“The magazine is not just about football, it’s about the impact football has in the community.

“And football is not just about kicking a ball around a pitch. It’s about society, it’s about developing skills, which is what HYPP is about.

“This collaboration is a great opportunity for the young people.”

Seventy3 director Andrew Brewster said: “I grew up in Hendon so this is a cause that’s particularly close to my heart.

“I’ve witnessed first hand the difference HYPP can make to young people’s lives.”

Seventy3 began just over a year ago.

It has gone from a new venture launched by two friends to a successful fanzine with four directors, a team of 25 writers and sales of up to 4,000 for each edition.
