Work is underway to improve access to a school parking area.

Since May, parents of pupils at Whitburn Village Primary School have been able to use a parking area at nearby fields to drop off and pick up their children instead of parking in nearby streets and along Cleadon Lane – the main route between Cleadon and Whitburn.

The arrangements – a partnership approach between South Tyneside Council and the school – not only helped to alleviate congestion outside the school, but made the area much safer by providing clearer walking routes for children and parents.

Now work is being carried out to widen the entrance to the car park, which previously only enabled one car in and out at any one time.

There are also plans to reduce the speed limit to 20mph directly outside the school and to install new street lighting.

Councillor Tracey Dixon, Lead Member for Area Management and Community Safety, said: “Parking around schools is a real concern, particularly during the school run on mornings and at home time, and Cleadon Lane is a very busy road.

“We were delighted to be able to help out with the parking situation by providing a place for parents to pick up and drop off their children off the main road. ”

Judith Merriman, head eacher at the school said: “We are so pleased with the work which is being done to increase safety for our children and their parents.

“The improvements to date have had an overwhelmingly positive response from our parents and the works to widen the entrance are sure to make the situation even better. “We would like to thank Councillor Dixon and the local authority for this.”
