What do Winston Churchill, whales and a Sunderland University lecturer have in common?

A SUNDERLAND University lecturer is set to travel across North America to give talks at aquariums.

Senior journalism lecturer Alex Lockwood will jet off to Canada and the USA to work for the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust in June.

Alex, who has worked as a journalist, editor and editorial manager for national magazines, will give 12 talks in cities including Vancouver, Seattle and Los Angeles.

He said: “This is a really fantastic, life-changing opportunity to further my experience as a writer and researcher.

“I’ve already been working with some of the world’s leading organisations in this field, so I can bring that knowledge back to the region.”

During his visit to North America, he will be researching best practice in marine mammal and conservation education.

The Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowships are awarded to UK academics and provide opportunities for British citizens to go abroad to carry out research projects.
