A SENSORY garden at a Sunderland school has been transformed into a winter wonderland.

Children at Thorney Close Primary are enjoying the magic of Christmas every day thanks to their own outdoor light show and Santa’s grotto.

Catherine Jones, headteacher at the Torquay Road school, said they held a special switch-on ceremony and invited families along.

She said: “We did a lot of work to create the sensory garden, but in the winter it doesn’t get used as much because a lot of the plants die off.

“We thought it would be a lovely idea to put Christmas lights up and it looks fantastic.”

Along with strings of lights, they also have huge baubles hanging from trees, a snowman and an igloo, as well as lots of other decorations for the children to look at.

The school has also created a Santa’s grotto.

Mrs Jones said: “The children are absolutely loving it, especially in the afternoons when it starts to get dark, it looks wonderful.

“It is a great addition to our usual Christmas decorations.”

The headteacher said the school has evening events next week such as plays, when the parents and families will be able to see all the lights in their full glory.
