TRIBUTES have been paid to a South Tyneside primary school headteacher who died at the weekend.

Jane Beckett, head of Cleadon Church of England Academy, lost her battle with pancreatic cancer.

Passionate about continuously raising standards of teaching and learning, she was an exceptional leader

Paul Bowens, chairman of the school’s board of directors, said the loss had been felt across the school.

“The whole school community is deeply saddened by the death of our principal, Jane Beckett,” he said.

“Jane has been at Cleadon since 1994, and headteacher since 1998.

“Passionate about continuously raising standards of teaching and learning, she was an exceptional leader who has led us through the amalgamation of the infant and primary schools, design and development of a first class new building; conversion to academy status and, most importantly, recognition as an outstanding school.

“Loved by staff and children, her death leaves a huge gap in our lives. Her legacy will be our commitment to maintain and build on the standards Jane set.”

The school was open yesterday but children were not working to the usual timetable.

He added: “We have additional staff, helpers and support from the local authority bereavement team.”

“At this time all our thoughts are with Jane’s family, who more than any of us know what we have lost.”

Mrs Beckett is survived by husband Eddie.
