A TUTOR is hoping her students will be a cut above when they take part in a national barbers contest.
Students and staff from East Durham College’s barber team will take part in the Barber Connect Competitions held in Wales on Sunday.
Maxine Walker, 26, and Orianne Million, 18, along with their lecturer Alison Scattergood, have beaten off competition from hundreds of other entries from more than 80 colleges around Great Britain to reach the final.
Orianne and Maxine have qualified for the final 10 in their respective competition categories.
Maxine will compete in the men’s styling category and Orianne in the trends category.
Lecturer Alison has also gained a place in the top four to take part in the master’s category.
It will see her go head-to-head with her rivals shaving patterns into heads of hair, while in a boxing ring.
The college has also been named in the top three for the best overall college category.
Its hair and beauty department has already picked up a number of awards recently.
It was named best overall college at the Regional Association of Hair and Therapy (AHT) Awards and its team has also picked up a number of top medals at the National Association of AHT awards, which were held in Blackpool.
Alison said: “It’s brilliant to have students once again selected in the Barber Connect Competitions this year.
“It’s an amazing achievement and a great event to be a part of, both for me and the students.
“Hopefully, they will gain some great competition experience from being part of the event.
“Fingers crossed, we come back with some good results and cap off what has been a fantastic year for the department.”
The contest is being held at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.
