Esteemed North East journalist Kevin Maguire is to help train up the next generation of newshounds at the University of Sunderland.

The Associate Editor of the Daily Mirror and political columnist is to take up a role as a Visiting Professor in the University’s School of Journalism.

South Shields-born Maguire will provide students with an expert insight into political life as well as pass on his knowledge of working for some of the UK’s biggest daily newspapers.

And the lifelong Sunderland fan says lecturing at the David Puttnam Media Centre, Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s, will be a real honour.

He said: “Sunderland is a fantastic University so I’m thrilled and honoured to become a Visiting Professor of Journalism.

“It was easy to accept when the staff are excellent, facilities brilliant and the students eager to learn and progress. I’ve been lucky to work as a journalist for nearly 30 years and hopefully I can use my experience of newspapers, magazines, TV, Radio, internet news and social media to assist others.

“Journalism’s a great career and interesting trade to study when it impacts massively on all our lives. I look forward to working with Graeme Thompson, Dean of the Faculty of Arts Design and Media, and all his staff.

“I will continue to work for the Daily Mirror in London, but I’m also the local lad with another good reason to come home regularly to the North East.”

An award-winning journalist, Maguire regularly appears on Sky News and BBC. He also co-authored a book on great Parliamentary scandals and was formerly Chief Reporter on the Guardian and Labour Correspondent on the Daily Telegraph.

From mid-2011 he co-hosted a Sunday morning politics show, with the Daily Mail‍ ‘s Andrew Pierce, on talk radio station LBC 97.3, having previously been a regular stand-in presenter of other shows across the station. He gave up the show in March 2012 to concentrate on his job at the Daily Mirror.

Graeme Thompson, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media at the University of Sunderland, said: I’m delighted to welcome the distinguished journalist and political commentator Kevin Maguire as a Visiting Professor. He shares our passion for journalism and will inspire a new generation of writers, producers and reporters.

“Kevin’s insights, contacts and experience in print and broadcast journalism will be a major asset to our students. Sunderland is rightly proud of its reputation as a centre of excellence for journalism. Our students benefit from great facilities and exceptional staff which is why so many of our graduates are employed in the sector.”
