A TEDDY Bears’ Picnic was held at a Sunderland nursery to celebrate success.
The Pennywell Early Years Centre held the fun day for the children after becoming the first nursery in Sunderland to get the new Early Years Healthy Schools Award from the local authority.
And, after recently being rated as outstanding by Ofsted inspectors and getting the ICAN communication status for the second time, the Portsmouth Road nursery had plenty to celebrate.
Manager Judy Donnelly said: “It has been a very successful year for all our families and for the staff as well. We have had to have a continuous programme of action to achieve these things.
To obtain the new healthy schools award, the children’s centre had to introduce a wide range of measures and get families on board, with activities such as baking and cooking, first aid and food and hygiene sessions.
Mrs Donnelly said: “It is about working with the parents and families, so they can feed their children healthy meals when they are not here. It is about them being more active and physically enjoying time with their children.”
She said they also held sessions on how to have fun with children that won’t cost any money.
The manager said she was delighted with the way families had embraced the health and fitness sessions and for some it has given them the boost to go on and do other activities, such as volunteering work.
