Sunderland University vice chancellor to step down

Sunderland University vice-chancellor and chief executive Peter Fidler has announced he is to step down after 15 years. He will take up the role of president.

SUNDERLAND University vice-chancellor and chief executive Peter Fidler has announced he is to step down after 15 years.

Professor Fidler, also chief executive of the university, will take up a new role as its president until he retires in January 2016.

“I have been proud to lead the university through a period of change and transformation,” he said.

“We are now a truly international university which provides huge economic value and impact to our city and region.

“In the next two years it is vital that we secure our global and civic partnerships, and take advantage of the many exciting opportunities in front of us.

“I am delighted to be asked to take up this new role of president.”

University deputy vice-chancellor and deputy chief executive Shirley Atkinson, will take up the role as temporary vice-chancellor and chief executive from September 2014, when professor Fidler steps down, until someone new is appointed in January 2016.

Professor Fidler added: “Over the next period we will build on our success and underpin the university’s capacity to become a great civic and international university.”
