HUNDREDS of pupils learnt about a career in healthcare to help them on the path to work.

The event, staged by Work Discovery at the Stadium of Light, gave 200 schoolchildren the chance to gain an insight into the variety of jobs available in the health and care sector.

They followed two interactive patient journeys as they encountered about 40 different professionals working in the industry, including medical staff, pharmacy, occupational therapy, paramedics and all the support services.

Dennis Little, workforce development and education manager for City Hospitals Sunderland, said: “This was a great opportunity for students and pupils in the city to see the diversity and range of jobs that are available in the sector.

“It is not just about the obvious jobs that spring to mind, such as the doctors and nurses, there are a wide range of jobs available within the health and care sector.

“We hope this event will broaden students awareness of the scope of career options available and highlight opportunities.”
