IF BAKING was an Olympic sport then staff and students at Sunderland College would win gold.
The college won first place in every category, and was also awarded an overall certificate of appreciation, in the Sunderland 2012 Bake-Off Competition, which took place at Herrington County Park as part of Sunderland’s Olympic Torch celebrations.
Staff and students baked scones, shortbread, cup cakes and a special Olympic and Paralympic-themed cake for the special event.
Kathryn Shepherd, manager of The Lounge Bistro at Sunderland College, said: “We knew we had a winning team at the college, now we have the proof, picking up every award available.
“This is a fantastic achievement for our students.
“The bake-off was a fun way of working together, showcasing the students’ work and what we do here at the college.
“It was great fun and a really good day. Despite the drizzle lots of people turned out to create a real festival atmosphere.”
The Lounge Bistro supports more than 80 students training to be chefs, hospitality managers and front-of-house staff.
