A CITY MP today backed plans by Sunderland AFC’s official charity to build a £15million education centre.
The Beacon of Light will be built on land next to the Stadium of Light and Sunderland Aquatic Centre, with work on the three-storey location to begin later this year and doors opening in 2017.
The Echo reported last week that the Beacon is set to house a new “alternative provision” school to offer a brighter future to pupils and vulnerable young people, who are not performing well in normal classrooms.
Sunderland Central MP Julie Elliott told the Echo: “The Beacon of Light will empower people to take responsibility for their own choices and actions – encouraging people to learn more, do more and be more.
“It will allow them to change their world and the world of their families and neighbours – a succession of steady and gradual changes that write the story of social and economic regeneration in the North East.
“The Beacon of Light represents a fantastic opportunity – an opportunity for us to help others enact a great change upon our region.”
