New College Durham students celebrated being the best in the country after excelling at a prestigious World Skills competition.

Their hard work was rewarded with a gold medal and three students being selected for the World Skills UK Squad.

Vocational Access student Ben Joyce, 17, won gold for the Inclusive Skills competition in Data Processing at Level 1.

He said: “It was the first time in 17 years that I have won anything and I would like to do more competitions.”

Painting and decorating students Gemma Chizary and Ryan Chamberlain were selected for the UK Squad, along with catering student Ryan Grey.

The UK Squad will take part in World Skills in October 2017.
