JUNIOR footballers have proved themselves to be cup kings of the North East.

St Benet’s RC Primary School team took home the Bishops Cup, which is competed for by catholic schools in the region, after the Monkwearmouth school’s seven-a-side team emerged victorious.

After an intense competition lasting six months, the team made it to a final day of action, which was decided in a round robin format.

St Benet’s took on fellow Sunderland school St Mary’s, as well as St Bernadette’s and English Martyrs, both from Newcastle.

Needing just a point from their final game against English Martyrs, the St Benet’s lads edged the contest 1-0 to be crowned champions, at St Stephen’s in Newcastle.

It caps off a fantastic season for the school, with the seven-a-side team also finishing runners-up in another tournament, and St Benet’s nine-a-side squad coming runners-up in their league.
