A TALENTED schoolgirl’s design is to feature on a Wearside MP’s Christmas card and will be sent to political figures across the UK.

Ellie Souter has scooped the top prize in a Christmas card competition run by Washington and Sunderland West MP Sharon Hodgson.

The 10–year–old John F Kennedy Primary School pupil’s design, marking Washington New Town’s 50th anniversary, emerged as the overall winner from dozens of entries.

The panel of judges, which as well as Mrs Hodgson, included councillors, art teachers and bosses from Asda at the Galleries, praised Ellie’s picture for its originality, and for being so topical in commemorating Washington’s special anniversary year.

Mrs Hodgson, said: “Running this competition is one of the highlights of my year, because you can see from the effort and the imagination that goes into every card just how excited the children are about Christmas.

“That does mean that it’s always really difficult to pick a winner out of all the excellent entries, but it was the theme of Ellie’s design which really made it stand out, and I can’t wait to see it on the printed cards.”

Ellie’s design will now be printed on the front of Mrs Hodgson’s Christmas card and sent to politicians and public figures around the country, as well as local groups, organisations and community leaders.

Keane Walmsley of Lambton Primary School, who scooped the nursery and reception category, and Katie Myers, of the same school, who took the Year 1 to 3 category, will have their designs featured on the inside of the card.
