WEARSIDE schoolchildren were among the winners at a regional sports final.
Pupils from Oxclose Community Academy, in Washington, were among the winners in the Sports Hall Athletics Finals at Temple Park Leisure Centre in South Shields.
More than 600 Year 5, 6, 7 and 8 pupils from 26 schools across the Tyne and Wear area competed against each other in a range of indoor athletics events such as obstacle relay races, long jump, triple jump, soft javelin and speed bounce.
Following an intense morning of competition, Oxclose’s Year 7 boys team took home gold for their age group.
Pupils taking part in the competition included Oxclose youngsters Fin Crawford and Ryan Harland.
Fin, 13, who plays football for Leam Rangers FC, said: “I’ve competed in the School Games before. It’s great to compete against other schools and test yourself against them.”
Ryan, 13, plays rugby at school and football for Washington Juniors FC.
He said: “I like playing a lot of sport because it’s great for keeping you fit and it’s also good fun. It’s good to be part of the school team so you’re competing for the school not just yourself.”
“I always get a bit nervous before it starts but then just go for it.
“There’s always a good atmosphere here.”
Claire Elliott, from Tyne and Wear Sport, said: “The standard of competition here today has been incredibly high.”
