PUPILS pulled on their running shoes to raise almost £4,000 for charity.
Students and staff at Houghton’s Dubmire Primary School took part in a Race at your Place event for Cancer Research and were staggered by the amount of money they raised.
Jill Bainbridge, admin officer at the Britannia Terrace school, said: “We didn’t expect to raise anywhere near that amount. We said we would like to raise around £500, but the total just kept going up and up.
“It is just fantastic. We are chuffed to bits.”
Although the money is still coming in, the school expects the final total to be near £4,000.
Ms Bainbridge said everyone had a really good time taking part in the event, and it was a lot of fun while raising money for a serious cause.
The children took on a pink theme, with people getting dressed up for the race.
Representatives from Cancer Research, including researchers and technicians, also went along to the school to join in the fun.
Rachel Smith, research engagement officer for Cancer Research, said: “A huge thank-you to everyone at Dubmire for taking part in their very own Race at Your Place event.”
