Nature nursery to work on Europe-wide project

The region’s only nature nursery has been chosen to take part in an international project.

Boldon Nursery, which carries out all its lessons in the great outdoors, has been chosen by the European commission for the £135,000 project.

Over 32 months the nursery will work with three other nature schools in Norway, Scotland and the Czech Republic.

They will then share their findings with the rest of the world about the positive impact learning through nature has on children of all ages.

Sue Stokoe, headteacher at the nursery, which was recently given an outstanding Ofsted for the second time, said she is very excited about the project and finding out how the other three schools do things.

Mrs Stokoe said: “We are so excited and thrilled to be chosen. The application process was really tough, so we are delighted.

“It is a massive responsibility to show how working with nature is an amazing way for children to learn.”

No matter what the weather, the children at Boldon Nursery, in Reginald Street, Boldon Colliery, can be found wrapped up and playing outdoors if they want to.

The headteacher said: “The children are out there all day, every day if they want to be.

“Whenever someone visits our nursery they will find the majority of the children outside.

“Children love being outdoors.”

Mrs Stokoe said the four schools working together will be aiming to show to other schools how much working with nature helps children to learn and gives them skills which are important throughout their lives.

As well as playing host to the visitors from the other three schools involved in the project in November, Boldon Nursery will also be welcoming a group of teachers from Australia this month who want to see how a nature school operates.
