A WEARSIDE MP is urging schools to take part in Parliament Week.
Washington and Sunderland West MP Sharon Hodgson is backing the national initiative, run by Parliament’s Education Service.
Now in its second year, the event aims to encourage pupils to take an active interest in how decisions which affect their everyday lives are made in Westminster.
The week of activities will take place from November 19 to 25.
The Shadow Education Minister has written to all the schools in the area to encourage them to get involved in the many activities aimed to inspire students to take part in the democratic process.
Mrs Hodgson said: “Parliament Week is an important initiative to encourage young people to explore how the law-making process works, and how that relates to the issues that are important to them.
“The materials that the Education Service have produced give schools everything they need to bring what can be a stuffy and complicated subject to life, so I hope that they will take the opportunity to help pupils not only discover the history and institution of Parliament, but also to show them why going out and voting in elections, and lobbying their MP in between elections, is so important.”
