Hundreds of sporty schoolchildren battled it out in different events on Wearside.

Youngsters from across the North East came to Silksworth Community Pool and Wellness Centre for the Tyne and Wear School Games Final.

After hours of intense competition, Newbottle Primary Academy took gold in the tennis competiton, while Newbottle Village Primary School took bronze in the same sport.

Castle View Enterprise Academy took silver in the rounders event.

Speaking about taking part, Jenny Young, 14, of Castle View Enterprise Academy, said: “Our teacher decided to start a rounders team and so we did some training together and then did more training as part of our sport GCSE class, and we all really enjoyed it.”

“We’ve done the Sunderland Schools Triathlon and the schools athletics competition, as well as other events.”

“I’ve always loved sport since I was little.

“I like working as a team and it also gets you out and about doing things, I don’t like just sitting around.”

Tamsin O’Wellen, also 14 and also of Castle View Enterprise Academy, said: “We took part in the competition last year but didn’t get this far. It’s going really well today and we’re hoping to finish in one of the top two places.”

“It’s good to see other people’s strengths and weaknesses and to also find your own.

“I really enjoy sport and I’m hoping to be a PE teacher when I leave school.”
