AGILE children claimed a host of medals at the North of England Schools Sports Acrobatics championships.

Pupils from Grindon Hall School, in Sunderland, scooped 25 prizes and 13 performers will now progress to the British Schools finals with the North of England team.

The region’s contest was held at Joseph Swan School, Gateshead, with Grindon Hall claiming 13 gold medals, two silver and 10 bronze. Schools from Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland, Cumbria and North Yorkshire took part.

The national finals are in Stoke on May 7-8.

Sports acrobatics is a mixture of gynastics and acrobatics set to music. The sport is perhaps best known for producing Spelbound, who won ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent last year.

Teacher and coach Jane Henderson said: “I’m really proud of all of the team. We had 25 entrants and won 25 medals, which is fantastic.

“It’s great to have so many going on to the national finals now.”
