A FIREFIGHTING hairdresser’s red hot design has proved a winner.

Student barber Ken Ball took inspiration from his job as a firefighter to create a flame-themed design for the national finals of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists competition in Blackpool.

The creation gained him the silver medal in the Men’s Alternative category.

Part-time East Durham College student Ken, who works at Nuts Barbers, in Consett, and is also a District Commander with Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Authority, worked closely with his lecturer Julie Williams in putting together the entry.

Julie said: “His styling on model Ben Anderson, who is also a student at college, left the audience gobsmacked and drooling.”

l Lisa Stoker, 30, from Peterlee, who grabbed fourth spot in the Ladies Avant Garde category.
