City twins, Sophie and Katie Kelly, are celebrating double degree delight.
Having studied exactly the same GCSEs and A-levels together, identical twins Sophie and Katie Kelly were in no doubt they wanted to study the same degree at the University of Sunderland.
Their decision to stick together throughout their education has paid off as they both graduated with a 2:1 from their Public Health Degree Course.
However, there was one bump separating the 23-year-old sisters, as they picked up their awards during the summer graduation ceremonies at the Stadium of Light, with Sophie heavily pregnant and due to give birth.
Sophie, from Moorside, Sunderland, said: “We do absolutely everything together, from our interests to our outlook, to wanting to follow a career in health. We were in no doubt we wanted to study the same degree course and always had an idea we might end up with the same results.
“It was wonderful to collect the degree alongside Katie, and I knew if my baby wanted to make a surprise appearance at least I’d have my sister alongside me.”
Katie added: “I couldn’t imagine studying without Sophie, we’ve been a great support to each other all the way through. It was hard work, but we encouraged each other and thoroughly enjoyed the course.”
The former St Anthony's Girls' Catholic Academy students, are planning to pursue a career in public health, and are looking to complete a PGCE course at Sunderland so they can also teach their favourite subject.
However, Sophie admits she’ll give herself a little extra time to settle into life as a new mum once her baby arrives.
