A SCHOOL football team is to represent its county in a national competition after doing the double.
South Hetton Primary’s team lifted the Durham County Schools’ Football Association cup, winning a place in the English Schools tournament next March.
The seven-a-side squad, made up of nine nine- to 11-year-olds, has also won the Phoenix Cup after beating teams in County Durham.
Team coach Jamie Wilson, who works as an ICT technican at the school, said: “They’re the best team I’ve ever seen playing at this age.
“It’s the final year they will play all together before some of them go up to the bigger school.
“We’re very proud.”
The team, which won the county cup when they were in Year 4, is made up of Sonny Best and Aaron Davidson, who both belong to Sunderland AFC’s academy, Ethan Lockwood, who is a member of Middlesbrough FC’s academy, along with Callum Wright, Ross Landon, Asa Luckhurst, Niall Lee, Brandon Inchliffe, Callum Sims and Nathan Jones.
Results in the Phoenix Cup include a 3-0 win over Easington Village and 1-0 over both Easington Colliery and Our Lady of the Rosary in Horden.
In the county cup, the team beat Easington Village again with the final score 5-1, Finchale Primary 3-1 and Sunderland High School 1-0.
The boys were congratulated during a special assembly before the end of the half-term.
Mr Wilson hopes to build on the achievements of the team and continue their cup success with the four Year 5 players who will be left when the older boys move on to comprehensive school.
