A college-based travel agency picked up an accolade at a national awards ceremony.

Based at New College Durham, Global Travel was awarded the Long Service Award for the whole of the north region at the parent organisation’s Global Travel annual conference and awards ceremony.

This award is great news and confirms the college’s place as a leading provider of travel and tourism education.

The event took place in Chester and welcomed representatives from some of the leading names in travel, including SuperBreak, Silversea, Jet 2 Holidays, Thomas Cook, Leger and Red Sea Holidays.

Cherie Richards, head of commercial at Global Travel Group Head Office, said: “New College Durham has operated its own Global Travel agency for the benefit of its students and staff since October 1997.

“We were therefore delighted to award them the Long Service Agent North award.”

Global Travel provides valuable work experience for students on travel and tourism courses and is also open to students, staff and members of the public to book holidays, travel and accommodation.

Students carry out work placements in the agency and use the latest industry software to gain real work skills and knowledge and to experience a commercial retail travel agency.

John Widdowson, principal and chief executive at New College Durham, said: “This award is great news and confirms the college’s place as a leading provider of travel and tourism education.”

Global Travel has recently been acquired by DNATA, part of the Emirates Group.

Jane Williamson, travel agency manager at New College Durham, joined the college two years ago and has 25 years’ experience working in the travel industry.

She said: “I am delighted with the Long Service Award. Customers are looking for exciting new adventures and new destinations and they are coming back to independent agencies for their customer service, personal touch and peace of mind.”

The staff at Global Travel also won a VIP London trip earlier this year for being one of SuperBreak’s top selling agents in the North East region.
