Champion swimmers make a splash at gala

YOUNGSTERS were thrilled when they took the honours at a swimming gala.

The children at Woodlea Primary School, in Fence Houses, were delighted when they were crowned County Durham champions in the school games swimming gala.

A team of Key Stage 2 children won through the heats to represents the Chester-le-Street area of the county at the event, which was held at the Freeman Quays Leisure Centre in Durham city.

The Woodlea youngsters were up against teams representing the city, Derwentside, Sedgefield, Weardale and Easington districts.

But the 15 eight-11-year-olds, who are all members of local swimming clubs, couldn’t be beaten and took the county trophy.

Irene Black, a member of staff at the school, said: “They were over the moon, it was a fantastic achievement.

“We are really, really proud of them, they have done very well.”
