YOUNG television stars Bars and Melody proved a big hit with youngsters on Wearside.

The singing duo, who came third in the live finals of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent, performed at Washington School on the first leg of a UK tour.

Charlie Lenehan, 15, and Leondre Devries, 13, who make up the group, said they were thrilled to be at the Wearside school and excited about the release of their first single, Hopeful, later this month.

Leondre, said: “Being on Britain’s Got Talent was the most amazing experience, I can’t imagine anything else like it.

“It is unreal, we are just normal school boys, but all this has happened.”

The boys’ powerful anti-bullying rap turned them into international sensations.

They so impressed Simon Cowell that he chose them as his golden buzzer act.

And they have received 33 million views on You Tube and have appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in America.

Charlie, said: “We recently became

anti-bullying ambassadors for the Princess Diana Awards. It is a really important thing for us because of what Leondre went through with bullying.”

Bars and Melody met with youngsters in Washington School’s anti-bullying team and invited them onto the stage during the performance, urging all pupils to seek help and tell someone if they are being bullied.

John Hallworth, executive headteacher at the Spout Lane school, said: “It is fantastic for the school to have the group perform here. The pupils have been so excited, it has caused quite a stir.

“And, of course it is a very important message they are delivering.”

Because of the size of the school hall, a limited number of pupils were able to watch the performance live, but it was recorded and played across the school at lunchtime to make sure no-one missed out. The concert at Washington School, was the only one in the North East, and Bars and Melody will perform at a school in each region of the country over the next two weeks.

Hopeful will be released on July 27 via Syco Music/ Sony Music Entertainment. The single will also feature a brand new track – Shining Star – that was co-written by the boys themselves.
