Blooming good city nursery

THE outlook is sunny at a Wearside nursery, say education bosses.

Sunflowers Nursery in Baxter Road, Sunderland, has been rated good overall by Ofsted inspectors.

They said: “The quality of teaching is good as staff effectively promote the children’s learning and development through a variety of fun and challenging activities. As a result, children make good progress and are engaged and motivated in their play.

“An effective key-person system helps children form positive relationships and secure attachments, which promotes their emotional well-being. Therefore, children are happy, settled and comfortable in their surroundings.”

They said the management team has clear development plans in place and shows high levels of commitment and enthusiasm to support children’s achievements over time and improve the quality of the practice within the setting.

Sunflowers Nursery, registered in 2004, operates from two rooms in Winchester House, Town End Farm, and is open 51 weeks a year.

Inspectors said that to improve further, the nursery should extend opportunities in the outdoor area for children to develop their investigation and exploration skills and encourage them to further develop their independence and self-care skills during meal times.
