A school in Sunderland was visited by a world football legend as he launched a soccer camp yesterday.

Franco Baresi, the legendary former AC Milan and Italy defender, was at Monkwearmouth Academy, Torver Crescent, Sunderland, to launch a football camp at the school, which will take place between August 24 and 28.

The success of this project lies in its unique offering that combines fun, sport, health and the possibility for each participant to train according to the Milan Academy integrated coaching method.

Any budding footballers aged five to 16 will be able to snap up one of the 100 places on the course, which will be delivered by AC Milan Junior Camp and are available for £100.

Monkwearmouth Academy has been chosen as one of three locations for camps this summer, and Mr Baresi visited yesterday.

Headteacher Steve Wilkinson said: “Franco was really good with the children, and held a question and answer session with them in the hall.

“He then went outside and watched them play, and you could see he was keen to join in and do a bit of coaching. He gave a lot of time to pose for photographs and sign autographs for everyone who wanted them.”

Mr Baresi said: “The success of this project lies indeed in its unique offering that combines fun, sport, health and the possibility for each participant to train according to the Milan Academy integrated coaching method.

“With more than 15 years of experience all over the world, AC Milan is the leader among the professional clubs in organizing camps for kids.

“We are happy to be in the UK, the country where football was born.

“I recommend all boys and girls who attend the camp to give maximum effort and commitment.

“This experience can be an important opportunity for improving new football skills and training methods and most of all for playing with other young players, having fun and making new friends.”

As well as five days worth of coaching, the youngsters will receive an AC Milan strip, while the pick of the bunch may get the chance to train in Milan and visit the famous San Siro stadium.

Details on how to apply for a place in the camp will be released shortly on the school’s website, www.monkwearmouth.sunderland.sch.uk.
