OCTOGENARIAN Edna Ruffell was given an extra special Black Cats surprise for her 80th birthday.

Son Jeff arranged for a stretch limo to pick her up from her Eden Vale home so she could travel in style to Sunderland AFC’s game with West Brom at the Stadium of Light.

Edna, also mum to Neil and grandmother to Becky, then enjoyed the game in the comfort of an executive box surrounded by her adoring family.

Jeff, a sales director at Sunbrite Home Improvements, said his mum had a superb time.

Jeff, who put together the birthday treat with help from wife Carolyn, said: “It was a great day which she really enjoyed.

“Everything went according to plan in terms of the surprise. She even got a shock when she got into the box and saw all the family waiting for her.”

The match, however, didn’t go as smoothly, as Steve Bruce’s men found themselves two goals down against the Baggies within the first five minutes.

Sunderland rallied to get themselves level by the half hour, through a Nicklas Bendtner strike and an Ahmed Elmohammady header, but couldn’t go on to win the game.

“The result wasn’t the one we wanted but at least we didn’t get beat,” added Jeff.

En route to the stadium, Edna was driven around Grangetown, the area where she grew up and met her now-deceased husband Bob.

Jeff said: “She used to go to Roker Park a lot in the 50s and 60s when she first met my dad so we always wanted to do something like this for her.”
