SUNDERLAND’S economic progress has been highlighted in Parliament.

A reception in the House of Lords marked the second anniversary of the city’s 15-year economic masterplan, with the release of an update report to MPs and leading figures in the automotive, offshore, software and manufacturing industries.

Highlights included Nissan Sunderland’s best-ever year, more than 2,000 new automotive jobs created by the likes of Lear Corporation and SNOP UK, and a rise in business at the Port of Sunderland.

City council leader Paul Watson said: “Sunderland has grown in each of its key sectors since we put in place our economic masterplan.

“The rate of growth is remarkable given a continued downturn which has affected all parts of the UK.”
