Echo reporter hits the radio airwaves + AUDIO

NEWSPRINT meets the airwaves as we team up with SunFM to bring you the latest showbiz news.

Tune in to Sunderland’s most-listened-to radio station over the next three weeks and you’ll hear our entertainments editor Katy Wheeler.

She’ll be reading the showbiz news for the next few weeks as a replacement for the station’s usual presenter Ashleigh Whitfield who is on holiday.

It means she’ll be juggling writing copy with mastering the art of radio.

“It’s not something I’ve ever done before,” she said. “But SunFM asked me to step in for Ashleigh and I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn some new skills. The technology and what’s required is a lot different to that at Echo House, but I’m starting to get used to it.”

Katy, 30, who’s been at the Echo for eight years, features on the Breakfast Show with Simon Grundy as well as on showbiz bulletins throughout the day.

The Breakfast Show is broadcast weekdays from 6am.

Simon said: “I’ve read Katy’s articles for years and kept bumping into her at various events across the city over the years and she was the first person I thought of when a vacancy arose on The Breakfast Show.

“A 5.30am alarm call might prove a problem, but she’s still young enough, just, to be able to cope with it. I must admit that it took some time to persuade her to do it, but now she’s been doing it for a few days, she’s a total natural.”
