Tearful Dick Advocaat was again left choked with emotion after seeing the support from Echo readers urging him to stay in the Sunderland hot-seat.

A whopping 96 per cent of Sunderland fans said they wanted Advocaat to continue as Black Cats boss in the Echo’s online poll this week – but he will have to persuade his wife to postpone their retirement and continue his glittering managerial career.

Advocaat, who was left in tears after Sunderland sealed Premier League survival at Arsenal on Wednesday, struggled to hold back his emotions after being shown a copy of the Echo’s front page yesterday.

Later in the afternoon, he was again emotional when he chatted with local media over those celebrations at Arsenal.

When asked about the emphatic result from the Echo’s poll, he joked: “Four per cent? Who were the four per cent!”
