A PENSIONER has died after the car she was a passenger in was involved in a head-on collision.

The 85-year-old woman from Durham died this morning at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, following the accident where the A179 and the B1280 meets the A19 at Sheraton, at 8pm on Monday.

She had been the passenger in a white Ford Ka, which was heading towards Hartlepool when it was in a collision with a black Mitsubishi Warrior heading in the other direction.

The driver of the Ford, an 84-year-old from Spennymoor suffered whiplash and bruising, as did the 43-year-old woman who had been driving the Mitsubishi and her 15-year-old son who had been a passenger.

Police are expected to confirm the identity of the dead woman in coming days.
