A SCHOOLGIRL became impaled on the handlebars of bicycle in a shocking accident.
The ten-year-old was impaled on the brake lever while playing at her grandparents’ home in Larches Road, Durham City, yesterday afternoon.
It pierced the right-hand side of her chest and was protruding from her back, near her shoulder blade.
The incident happened about 2pm. Fire crews used specialist equipment to cut the handlebars in half.
The girl was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham by ambulance, for surgery to remove the pieces of bike.
Her injuries were not thought to be life threatening.
