THE rhythmic beat of African drummers signalled the countdown to this year’s Houghton Feast celebrations.

The 10-day festival starts on Octover 4, and members of Houghton Pipe Band and music group Arts Isiziba joined Houghton Feast Steering Group in The Broadway to get preparations under way.

The theme of this year’s event is “All the fun of the Fair”, and it will incorporate traditional elements of the Feast – which dates back to the 12th century – with modern twists, including a singer-songwriter competition.

The Mayor of Sunderland Coun Robert Heron and his wife, Deputy Mayoress Julianna Heron, will officially open this year’s Feast.

Coun Anne Lawson, chairman of the Houghton Feast Steering Group, said: “I can’t wait for the Feast this year, as there is something to appeal to everyone.”
