TWO drivers had a lucky escape after their cars collided.
A Vauxhall Corsa and VW Golf were pushed off the road before slamming into the fence of a neighbouring field.
A lamppost on the road was also damaged during the smash.
Police and the ambulance service were called to the accident at Chester Road, in Shiney Row, yesterday at about 7.50am.
The drivers were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman has described the injuries as “not serious”.
The road was not closed but the smash caused rush-hour traffic chaos.
Traffic officers remained at the scene into the morning to clear the road of debris and keep traffic flowing.
