The car just missed a bus stop and then collided with furniture that had been left in the street before coming to rest in a garden.

Emergency services were called, and firefighters from Rainton Bridge and North Moor Lane fire station worked with paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service as they rescued the man from the vehicle.

He was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary with life-threatening injuries and his condition is today described as stable.

His 19-year-old female passenger suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital for treatment.

The road was closed for around six hours after the collision.

Police investigations are continuing and officers are appealing for anyone who saw the incident, or the circumstances leading up to it, to get in touch.

In particular, they would like to speak to the driver of a light-coloured vehicle who was travelling in the same direction as the Punto from the area of Durham Road into Hetton and back towards Houghton Road.

The driver, or any witnesses to the incident, are asked to contact police on 101 extension 69191 quoting reference 1269 24/10/15.
