A MOTORIST is lucky to be alive after his car burst into flames.
The driver of the Ford Fiesta had been involved in an accident with a Toyota Hilux and got out of the vehicle moments before it caught fire, on the A183 Chester Road, near Penshaw.
Echo reader Ian Spedding passed the scene just before noon yesterday and took these images on his phone.
Ian, 39, said: “The front of the car was damaged from the accident. Then there was some smoke and it just burst into flames.
“The guy is lucky he got out when he did.”
A spokesman from Northumbria Police said: “At 11.47am a passing motorist called to report a car on fire on the A183, just west of the A19, following a crash.
“The road was closed for about half an hour while the burnt-out vehicle was removed.”
