Driver arrested after Chester-le-Street crash leaves three in hospital

A MOTORIST was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after an A1 crash which left two other people in hospital.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the serious collision between the two vehicles near Chester-le-Street.

The crash took place at about 1.45am on Saturday between a Vauxhall Astra and a Ford Focus.

It happened about a mile south of Junction 63 on the northbound carriageway. The Astra then collided with a barrier near the junction slip road and the driver, a 28-year-old man from the Newcastle area, was arrested at the scene for drink driving and dangerous driving.

He was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham with minor injuries.

The driver of the Ford Focus, a 57-year-old woman from Durham and her passenger, a 60-year-old man also from the city, were taken to the same hospital for treatment.

The driver sustained minor injuries and her passenger, head and chest injuries. His condition is not thought to be life threatening.
