War veteran Donald Nicholson faces a short wait to be reunited with his lost medals.

The Echo revealed yesterday that the medals – thought to have been lost on a visit to the unveiling of the new Bomber Command memorial in Lincoln – had been found just yards from Donald’s home in Castle Dene Grove, Houghton, and handed in at the town’s police station.

Donald went round to the station this morning, only to find the medals have been transferred to the secure storage facility at Southwick for safe keeping and will not be available until Monday.

“I was disappointed, but not to the extent that I was worried, because I know they are safe,” he said.

“But I was looking forward to the final chapter, and now it has not happened.

“I will be ready on Monday.”
