A new café in Sunderland is offering gourmet chow for your bow-wow.

The Doggie Diner, at Sea Road, Fulwell, is the first of its kind in the region and offers a unique experience for dog lovers and their canine companions.

It offers a Human and Hound menu plus extra facilities to ensure both two-legged and four-legged customers leave with a smile.

On entry, dogs are welcomed and a table booked in their name. They are then given their own bowl to drink from while their owners select them a treat from the Hound menu.

Doggie delicacies include the woofin (muffin), pupcake (cupcake), doggie popcorn, ice-cream, doughnuts, biscuits and even Barker Brew Beer, all of which are made with natural ingredients.

While waiting for their food, these hungry hounds can access a special indoor play pen with grass, dog beds, toys and its own picket fence to socialise with other waggy-tailed clientele.

Meanwhile dog-owners can ‘paws’ for a snack choosing from the ‘human menu’ of sandwiches, paninis, cakes and treats – whilst also perusing a range of doggie merchandise including bandanas, collars, leads, coats, cards and artwork which are available to purchase.

Coming together over a mutual love of dogs, the canine café is a joint venture between three local friends, Danielle Mendes, Adrienne Dickson and Amanda Wilkinson, from Boldon, who are running it alongside their day jobs.

Danielle Mendes, 39, joint owner and manager, said: “There are quite a few dog-friendly pubs and cafés in the area, but we offer something completely different.

“At the Doggie Diner, dogs are the VIPs. There is nowhere else like it in the North East, where dogs can socialise in this way, play, sleep, enjoy treats and all indoors while their owners can relax with a cuppa and a cake.

“We’ve made sure all of our employees are dog-lovers so that they will make a fuss of the pets and make them feel special.

“We’ve had fantastic backing from Sunderland City Council and have worked hard to get the venue ready, so we can’t wait to welcome more pooches to the premises.”

The local community have also given it the thumbs up, with more than 1,500 ‘likes’ on their Facebook page to date and nothing
but positive reviews from their first few days of operation.

“One of our first customers, a pug, got a little too excited in the play pen and decided to mark his territory” added Danielle.

“It was funny, but we’re all set up to deal with that so it’s all part of the fun.”

The Doggie Dinner is open 8.30am – 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and everyone is welcome, with or without man’s best friend.
